STOP Postpartum Hair Loss

Over the years I have had so many new mommy’s come in and freak out that they are going bald – YOU ARE NOT BALDING, I PROMISE it’s just postpartum hair loss and once it sheds your hair should feel just as it did before you were pregnant.

As if postpartum isn’t hard enough we start losing all of this beautiful hair we grew during those 9 months! This full luscious hair is a distraction from those pants that don’t fit me yet so I am hanging onto it for dear life!

Okay so I don’t have a magical unicorn potion to completely stop postpartum hair loss from happening altogether but I do have a great set of tips that act as a support system to have the least amount of postpartum hair loss as possible.

We will first get into why postpartum hair loss even happens, how much is normal, and my tips to help prevent some loss.

Why does postpartum hair loss happen?

During pregnancy, the hormones (estrogen) in your body cause your hair to become so thick and full because the hairs are growing for a longer period of time and not falling out. You could go months without losing any hair, whereas before pregnancy, you would naturally lose around 80-150 hairs a day, this number is dependent on how thick your hair naturally is.

How much postpartum hair loss is normal?

During postpartum, you can lose an average of 400 hairs a day which is about 4x the amount of usual, everyday hair loss! So don’t worry, you will not be left with less hair than you started with! However, it does all fall out at once leaving you with some unsightly patches of baldness.

During pregnancy you don’t lose any hair. While your body is busy growing your baby, it’s also keeping all your hair intact. This is why your hair feels thicker and fuller than usual. The good news is that although it seems like you’re losing ALL your hair, you’re really just losing all the hair that normally would have fallen out during the 9 months of pregnancy, but stayed in. It’s just playing catch up!

Tips for postpartum hair loss prevention

Collagen supplement

from bone and joint health to hair and skin this winning supplement does it all. Collagen hugely plays a part in your skin but also it helps to promote healthy strong hair to grow resulting in less breakage and longer hair.

Prenatal or biotin supplement

It is important to enhance and strengthen the proteins in our hair. This will result in longer and stronger hair.

Massage your scalp

slow but effective, massaging the scalp increases blood circulation to the hair follicles. This improves the texture of the hair resulting in thicker and stronger hair over time.

Hydration

do you have a dry scalp? is your hair not as shiny as you would like? does your hair grow too slow? the answer is always WATER WATER WATER. The main problem is most people are dehydrated and don’t even know it. Challenge yourself to drink even 2 extra glasses a day and just wait and see the amazing results!

Foods

I am always preaching we are what we eat! It’s all in the basics to healthy hair that eating foods rich in nutrients to help promote hair strength is also key.

No heat

It’s a no-brainer that heat causes death and breakage to hair, so the less heat the stronger and healthier your hair will be as a result.

Be gentle

too often we are hard on our hair from the way we brush our hair to the type of pillowcase we are sleeping on. Please brush from the bottom up to remove tangles as you go and buy a silk pillowcase to eliminate frizz and breakage.

Root Cover

If you’re experiencing too much loss for your liking then cover it up with root cover and nobody will know!

This is a great way to spray in your hairline or parting to cover up/blend in the weaker areas while your hair is growing back in. instantly thicken the appearance of your hair in many ways from simple eyeshadow to sprays. I personally prefer the sprays because of how fast and easy it is to cover everything.

To cover with eyeshadow simply take a shadow closest to your root/natural color and just apply with an eyeshadow brush to the hairline and parting.
