How does Hair Damage happen?
Hair Damage happens in so many different ways the sooner you familarize yourself with the most common problems and correct them the sooner you will see results in repairing that damage. Listed below are the most common forms of how hair becomes damaged
Cold weather/dry air
- sadly we can’t change the weather but maintaining proper home hair care will help act as a defense against the weather changes.
Over washing
- When hair becomes wet, the shaft swells, resulting in hair that is more elastic and easier to break. In addition, shampoos strip the oils your hair naturally produces resulting in hair that looks dull and dry. Opt for a dry shampoo to stretch those wash days out.
detangling wet hair incorrectly
- Wet hair is more elastic and more likely to break. Detangle with either a wide-tooth comb or my favorite The Wet Brush – it was designed to detangle without tugging. This brush has changed my life.
Rubbing wet hair with a towel
- Believe me or not but rubbing your wet hair with a towel just roughs up the cuticle of the hair resulting in frizzy poofy hair and more breakage.
Blow Drying
- Ding Ding Ding! lots of heat. It is important to use protective products for wet styling before drying your hair. On a positive note a good blow dry can actually make your style last longer resulting in using less heat on your hair, ergo less breakage long term.
Hot tools
- No brainer again, heat. Now is the time to use your protective products for dry styling and using your hot tools correctly on a medium setting. Believe me when I say you don’t need to use everything on the highest heat setting to get your style to last, you’ve probably been using the hot tool wrong and didn’t even know it!
Now that we know some of the most common ways hair becomes damaged, lets look into the best hair masks for home to help fight off the damage done.
